My wife, Chloe, died in an earthquake while vacationing with her lover. When the rescuers dug her out of the rubble, her body was already cold and stiff. She was found tightly shielding the man beneath her. It took significant effort to separate them. Everyone was marveling at this "epic, tragic love story"—until they contacted me, her husband. When I arrived, I saw Chloe’s body covered in a white sheet, and her spirit standing right next to it. Chapter 1 From seeing Chloe’s crushed body to sending her into the crematorium, only a few hours passed. The first burn didn't completely disintegrate everything. I refused the staff's suggestion for a second round. Why waste the money? I picked the cheapest urn available. Chloe’s ghost was screaming at me the entire time. Her vocabulary was so limited, it was pathetic. I ignored her like background noise. Watching Chloe being pushed into the incinerator, I beamed with a bright smile. "Chloe, oh Chloe. Look at the karma. The day after your lover, Julian, woke up, he was already laughing and hugging another woman. I bet he didn't even visit his savior." Hearing this, she froze, then flew into a rage. "Mason! Stop slandering him! Julian is kind! He's not a liar like you!" Chloe’s face was twisted and hideous. Oh well. Julian really hadn't come to see her. Chloe’s screaming gave me a headache. Suddenly, I felt even the cheapest urn was too good for her. I spent a dollar on a takeout box from a nearby restaurant. The box was a bit small. After a moment's thought, I decided to let Chloe shine one last time. I dumped the excess ashes into a roadside flowerbed. Tossing the takeout box into the trunk, I drove home. Although my best friend was watching my daughter, I was still worried. Chloe couldn't stray too far from me. In fact, she could only leave the morgue because I had arrived. She curled up in the back seat like she was dodging a plague. "Psycho," I muttered. Chapter 2 I parked and walked toward the house, but saw a man in casual clothes pacing at my door. It was Julian. This was a well-known wealthy neighborhood. Security was top-notch. Average people couldn't just walk in. I subconsciously looked at Chloe. She was just staring blankly ahead, murmuring, "Julian, did you come for me?" In that moment, it felt like someone shoved a fly in my mouth. I looked at the community's green belt. It looked like it needed some fertilizer too. Chapter 3 "What are you doing here?" Julian jumped, startled. Unnaturalness was written all over his face. "Mr. Carter... I... I came to find Chloe." I shook the takeout box containing half of Chloe at him. "You mean this?" Tears instantly welled up in Julian's eyes. "Is this Chloe? How could it be? I woke up and didn't see her... I thought she left me." Terrible acting. But someone ate it up. Chloe was soft-hearted to a fault. She lunged forward, trying to wipe Julian's tears, but her hands passed through him. "Julian, don't cry. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have doubted you. It's all this evil man's fault, he's trying to drive a wedge between us!" A ghost and a human in love. What a moving scene. Too bad one was acting, and the other was a fool. Two idiots. "If you didn't see her, couldn't you look? You have legs, don't you? Or a mouth to ask? Do you need me to draw you a map? Oops, said the quiet part out loud. Sorry." The crying stopped abruptly. Julian looked at me. "Mr. Carter, I know you're angry, that's why you're saying these things. I don't blame you. I know you don't love Chloe, and she would only be miserable with you. Please, give me her ashes." Seriously? Is he mentally ill? I didn't want to engage in mental gymnastics with him. "Julian, get this straight. Whose wife was Chloe? Now leave. I'm going home." Julian grabbed me anxiously. In the struggle, I lost my grip. The takeout box hit the ground. Good news: the box didn't break. Better news: the ashes spilled. I immediately called the police. Someone was trying to rob me. Seeing me call the cops, Chloe shielded Julian like a hero, cursing me. "You rotten, heartless bastard! You'll get your karma!" Heh. Who's scared?
